Torticollis involves shortening of the muscles on one side of the neck. This muscle is the sternocleidomastoid or SCM. The appearance of torticollis looks like an elevation of a shoulder with a head tilt to that same side while the chin is slightly angled away. Often torticollis is caused by abnormal positioning within the womb. Some symptoms include loss of range of motion, difficulty breast feeding particularly on one side, wanting to be held on one side and flattening of one side of the head.
How can chiropractic care help?
Torticollis is often a cause or a result of structural imbalances of the muscles in the neck causing vertebral imbalances. The goal of chiropractic care is to restore motion back in the joint and relieve stress on that are with focus on relaxation of the muscle and re-strengthening of surrounding muscles.
